Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Sermon Series:

To Follow the King

Mark

Series Summary: The book of Mark is an often-neglected gospel because it is generally misunderstood about how we are to read the book. Mark is not content to simply give us details about Jesus, but he is pulling us into the dramatic story of following Jesus, and he fulfills the promise of Isaiah to bring forth his New Exodus and to rescue his people from their slavery to sin. Mark shows that Jesus is the Messiah who leads his people in this new exodus, and he is the herald of his coming kingdom. Mark boldly proclaims the message of who Christ is and how Jesus will not allow us to tame his lordship to make him fit our categories. As we see Jesus reveal who he is, we constantly see him calling his disciples and launching them into the mission. As we see who Jesus is, we want to understand that he has called us to join him in proclaiming his coming kingdom and we are to follow him to the cross and resurrection. Mark can be broken up into three parts. In the first part going up to 8:26, the narrative stays in Galilee and is focused on the question of “Who is Jesus?” Then in the transition in 8:27 we see the bold proclamation of who Jesus is? He is the Son of God! And on this declaration we see a sharp change in the narrative as we accept Jesus, we then accept his Mission and we move towards Jerusalem. (8:27-10:52) The last Section (11:1-16:8) we see the faithfulness of Jesus in Jerusalem to complete his mission despite the faithlessness of his disciples. It ends with a call for the Disciples to return to where they started in Galilee.
